What is a chaperone?

An appropriately trained member of staff who is present during a consultation, examination, or procedure to support the patient and act as their advocate, while also providing professional reassurance for staff.

Intimate Examination

As defined by the General Medical Council (2024):

Examinations of the breast, genitalia, or rectum, and any examination where it is necessary to touch or be close to intimate areas of the body, or where the patient may feel particularly vulnerable.
